TANIKADO ARTS
Operating a contemporary art gallery, we have
contributed to the discovery of young artists and their promotion to
the world. In fostering art networks we have not only supported artist
exhibitions and presented their works in domestic and international
art fairs but we have also initiated a lecture series “Art Produce
Salon” and engaged in print production.

Chiyoda is not simply an art centre, here one can experience the work
of creative practitioners of all generations, genders, genres and
forms, while at the same time like a general merchandise store this
space offers frequent events and happenings, anticipating the many
different approaches to Tokyo to be exhibited here. Tanikado Arts
presents here 3 young artists who take as the source of their creative
production the insubstantial image, the things that can not be seen by
the eye, the phenomenon that can not be sensed in the everyday and
whom take an approach to Tokyo as a city whose real condition can
never be captured, a condition which is dream like and beyond our
grasp. (Ayako Tanikado)

When I was in
high school I heard the phrase “infinite possibility” many times. Now,
even though I can not be sure who said this, it is a memory which
still flies about me. I was born and brought up in Tokyo, there were
always many different people around me, there were no shortage of
places to go, habitually encountering new things in real time.
Certainly one can view Tokyo life as full of “infinite possibilities”.
However at the same time the infinite choices which spread before me
(people to meet, places to go) I wonder if I chose with conviction,
perhaps I passed by with fear. But finally after encountering no
restriction or suppression, certain of “freedom of choice”, we find no
happiness in “infinite possibility”. We are thrown into the wide open
world in a daze, and stumblingly roam it in a state of fright.
“Infinite possibilities” can be seen as a symbol of Tokyo. But we can
not get used to thinking this way. It rather forces us into earnest
wandering.

Since coming
to Kyoto already 12 years have passed. Before that I was living in
Ibaraki, I have therefore lived 15 years in Kanto and 12 years in
Kansai. Even though I can say that I lived in Kanto, I was living in
the far north of the northern most prefecture of this region, so
geographically Tokyo was not a place which I could easily cast my eyes
upon. Of course when looking at it from the perspective of Kyoto it is
even further away, so for me Tokyo is a memory of a distant place.
Certainly it is a centre of culture and economics (as Osaka is close
by I can feel this rather strongly) but although the “present” exists
here, it is very difficult to distinguish the new trend, the future.
On the other hand here in Kyoto, with its exclusive, unique air one
can daily feel that something new can be born here. However there can
be no doubt that the “present” of Tokyo is one of tremendous strength.
